My name is Gabby, I’m the Programs Manager at Binners’ Project. I work at the Binners’ Project on the business side of things and spend a lot of time tracking our environmental and social impacts.

All that to say - I’m pleased to be sharing the official results of Monday’s Coffee Cup Revolution.

Even though it rained non-stop, we had another record-breaking year!

Here’s the full scoop:

  • 53,783 coffee cups were collected in just 3 hours. At 5 cents a cup, this means $3,652.75 went directly into the pockets of the 210 binners who braved the elements to participate. A big thank you to the team of 17 Binners’ Project members, lead by binner staff Michael Leland, who worked together to expertly and independently design and run the depot.

  • We also had 48 guests - more than ever before - attend the roundtable discussions. The mix was tremendous, with city planners, architects, engineers, binners, low-income residents, business owners, recycling advocates, journalists, students, and NGOs alike engaging in lively conversations for two hours. Big thanks to our facilitators - Davin (BP), Bertha (BP), Peter (BP), Landon (Hastings Crossing BIA), Janice (Atira), and Michelle (City of Vancouver) - for making the conversations so productive and, of course, to all of you who participated with such enthusiasm.

None of this would have been possible without the support of our sponsoring partners - listed below - many of whom support the CCR or the Binners’ Project on an on-going basis. We’re tremendously grateful for their support and look forward to working with them and others to deliver even better results next year, on the fifth anniversary of the event.

Media coverage was as solid as ever with at least 5 news outlets picking up our story.

The Coffee Cup Revolution is yet another example of the hard, thoughtful work binners do year round through our event services and back-of-house sorting.

If you have an event coming up, or have a waste room in your building that is overflowing, incurring fines, or simply not hitting your waste-diversion targets, please contact us to discuss how our environmentally and socially conscious services can work for you.

We’re proud to work with places like Science World, SFU, Vancity, and others to deliver exceptional waste education and management services year-round, and we’d love the chance to show you and your business or building what we are capable of. To learn more about our services online, click here, or feel free to email me directly at gabby.korcheva@binnersproject.org

Thanks again to all who supported this event through sponsorship, attendance, and by spreading the word - we appreciate your involvement and look forward to championing an even greener, more inclusive city with you again in 2019!

Hello Gabby,

Glad to see the official stats. Do you also have the numbers for previous years handy for comparison, incl. the number of people who brought in cups for each of the years. Please note that next year is 2018, you jumped ahead a year to 2019 (at the end of your article) otherwise is is a great advertisement for the binners services!

Do you have a record for the CCR pop-ups as well (just some basic numbers: how many, where and how effective were they?) Are we continuing with those?

I'l be glad to use some of these stats to finish off my article about the CCR for the November (Fall-Winter) issue of the Right To Food Zine.

Thank you, Hendrik
