It's International Waste Pickers' Day

Today, around the world, waste pickers and the the groups that work with them are celebrating International Waste Pickers’ Day.

It’s a moment to celebrate the work of our very own waste pickers – or binners – and to come together to promote the remuneration of their work in cleaning up our streets and diverting waste from landfills.

There are three things you can do to help recognize binners today:

1. Buy a Hook: Binners Hooks can be mounted in back lanes to hang bottles, cans, and other objects of value from. This allows binners easier and safer access to these items, and is a simple way to acknowledge the contribution that binners make to the community. Get yours today.
2. Refer our services: Binners’ Project is always looking for new contracts for our Back-of-House Sorting and Waste Education programs. These programs provide income opportunities directly to binners.
3. Donate: Just $5 helps to cover the cost of a binners’ participation in one of our weekly meetings, where they have access to shifts, capacity building opportunities, and more. Chip in here.

Year-round, Binners’ Project is striving to break the stigma around work that binners, or waste pickers, do in their communities, and to support the economic opportunities that are in the informal and green economies.
